Recovery After 17 Fractures
Read how home physiotherapy helped a 55-year-old client regain independence, return to driving, and go fishing after a coma and 17 fractures.
Patient Profile
- The Patient
- A 55-year-old gentleman referred to us by his Case Manager.
- The Challenge
- A serious road traffic accident resulting in 17 fractures, internal bleeding, and weeks in a coma.
- The Situation
- Needed to rebuild strength and confidence after multiple surgeries and a long hospital stay.
Following his discharge from hospital, he was finally able to return home — but his recovery journey was only just beginning. That’s when his Case Manager got in touch with us, asking for specialist physiotherapy support to help him rebuild his independence.
A Step at a Time: The Intervention
Over the course of 12 sessions, we focused on what mattered most to him: regaining movement in his legs, building his strength and balance, and learning to trust his body again.
At first, even simple daily activities were challenging. However, with consistent effort and tailored exercises, little by little, progress came.
New Confidence, New Purpose
The changes have been remarkable. Alongside the physical improvements in his range of motion and pain reduction, he has regained his independence behind the wheel. We also supported him to join a local gym, giving him the tools and confidence to continue his strengthening journey independently.
Psychological well-being has played a huge part in his recovery. He has welcomed a new pet cat into his life, bringing him companionship and plenty of smiles.
Most importantly, he’s been able to return to one of his great passions: fishing. Recently, he managed his first overnight fishing trip since the accident. It wasn’t easy, but it marked a powerful step in reclaiming the things he loves most.
Moving Forward
He still has further to go, but he’s already achieved so much. With greater strength, confidence, and independence, he’s finding joy and purpose again — and beginning to reconnect with life the way it was before the accident.
Key Results
- Knee movement improved by 40 degrees
- Successfully returned to driving
- Managed his first overnight fishing trip since the accident
