Understanding What Causes Your Dizziness

Dizziness is rarely random; it is usually a sign that your balance system is out of sync. While Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause we treat, our vestibular physiotherapists are experienced in helping with a wide range of inner ear and balance conditions.

BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)

The most common cause of vertigo. Tiny crystals in the inner ear become dislodged, causing intense spinning when you turn your head, roll over in bed, or look up. The good news: BPPV is often resolved in just one to three treatment sessions.

Labyrinthitis

An inner ear infection that causes inflammation, leading to intense vertigo and sometimes hearing changes. Vestibular rehabilitation helps the brain compensate as the inner ear recovers.

Vestibular Neuritis

Similar to labyrinthitis but affecting the vestibular nerve specifically, often causing sudden, severe room-spinning dizziness without hearing loss. Targeted exercises retrain the brain to rebalance.

Meniere's Disease

A long-term condition affecting the inner ear, often characterised by attacks of vertigo, tinnitus, and pressure deep inside the ear. We help manage symptoms and improve balance between episodes.

Even if you do not have a specific diagnosis yet, our comprehensive home assessment can help identify the root cause and build a plan to steady your world again.

How Our Team Helps with Dizziness & Vertigo at Home

Our physiotherapists use clinically proven techniques to reset your balance system, while our occupational therapists help you navigate daily life safely and rebuild confidence.

Vestibular Physiotherapy

Specialist techniques to reset your balance system and retrain your brain to process movement accurately.

  • BPPV Treatment (Epley Manoeuvre) — Repositioning techniques to move displaced crystals back to their correct position, often resolving vertigo in one to three sessions.
  • Gaze Stability Exercises — Targeted exercises to stop the world blurring when you move your head, retraining the connection between your eyes and inner ear.
  • Balance Retraining — Strengthening the connection between your eyes, ears, and feet using your own surfaces at home.
  • Habituation Therapy — Gentle, repetitive movements to desensitise your brain to triggers, teaching it to tolerate movements without an exaggerated response.

Occupational Therapy

Practical support to help you navigate the world safely and rebuild trust in your body while you recover.

  • Visual Vertigo Management — Strategies for coping with busy environments like supermarkets and bright lighting that can trigger dizziness.
  • Anxiety & Breathing Techniques — Practical breathing and relaxation techniques to break the panic cycle that often accompanies vestibular conditions.
  • Home Safety Assessment — Assessing your home environment to remove hazards like loose rugs, dim hallways, and cluttered walkways.
  • Energy Pacing — Managing extreme fatigue from your brain working overtime, structuring your day to prevent exhaustion worsening dizziness.

Why Treating Vertigo at Home Makes Sense

If you are suffering from dizziness, the last thing you should do is get in a car. Travelling to a clinic can trigger nausea, spike your anxiety, and leave you too exhausted to benefit from the session.

By visiting you at home, we remove the stress of travel entirely. We can assess you in your real environment — treating you on your bed (where BPPV is often triggered), practising walking on your carpet, and helping you feel safe in the place where you spend the most time.

Home-based vestibular rehabilitation also means your exercises are immediately relevant. You practise the exact movements and routes that cause you difficulty, building real-world confidence from the very first session.

What to Expect from a Home Visit

1

Free phone consultation

Speak directly with Naomi, our Clinical Director. She will listen to your symptoms, answer questions, and help you decide if vestibular physiotherapy at home is right for your situation.

Comprehensive vestibular assessment

Your therapist performs specific diagnostic tests (including the Dix-Hallpike test for BPPV) in your home to identify the cause of your dizziness and create a personalised treatment plan.

What Our Patients Say

Independent reviews from patients we have helped. Read all our 5-star Google reviews.

"Thank you Medella! I was mostly bed-bound following a nasty ankle fracture when I Googled home physiotherapy near me. From the moment Naomi returned my call, I knew I had found the right match. She explained how Medella work, listened attentively, responded clearly and ensured a physiotherapist would contact me very soon. True to her word, Jo contacted me to arrange an initial visit including an assessment. From the moment of arrival, she was warm, professional, reassuring and very enabling. After each appointment, Jo emailed me a specific exercise programme which was measurable, achievable, relevant and targeted exactly what I needed including help with vestibular issues which had alarmed me. Jo responded promptly to my regular email updates providing me with further reassurance. I am now well on my way and, better still, continue with the exercises which are now a daily and enjoyable ritual with clear results! Thank you Jo, thank you Naomi. Given such high standards, professionalism and dedicated commitment, Medella is assuredly highly recommended."

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you fix vertigo (BPPV)?

If your dizziness is caused by BPPV (loose crystals in the inner ear), results can be dramatic. We can often resolve the spinning sensation in just one to three sessions using the Epley Manoeuvre. Other vestibular conditions may take longer and require a consistent exercise programme, but most patients notice improvements within the first few weeks.

Will the exercises make me feel dizzy or sick?

Sometimes, briefly. Vestibular rehabilitation works by retraining the brain, which requires exposing it to the movements that trigger your dizziness. We always work at your pace, and while you might feel momentarily unsteady during the session, this is a sign the treatment is targeting the right area. The temporary discomfort is worthwhile — it means recovery is happening.

Do I need a doctor's referral or an MRI?

No. Our physiotherapists are trained to perform comprehensive vestibular assessments in your home, including specific diagnostic tests like the Dix-Hallpike test. You do not need a GP referral to see us. If we identify any signs that require further medical investigation, we will refer you to your GP immediately.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the cause. BPPV often responds in one to three sessions. For vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis, we typically recommend four to eight weeks of vestibular rehabilitation with weekly sessions. Meniere’s disease and long-standing balance conditions may benefit from ongoing management. Your therapist will give you a clear idea after the initial assessment.

Which areas do you cover?

We provide home visits across Hampshire, Dorset, and Wiltshire. This includes Southampton, Bournemouth, Poole, Salisbury, Ringwood, and the surrounding towns and villages.
