Post-Surgery Rehab at Home
Leaving hospital after a major operation is a huge relief, but it can also feel overwhelming. You may have been discharged with a generic exercise sheet and a pair of crutches, leaving unanswered questions: "Am I walking correctly?" "Is this pain normal?" "How do I manage the stairs?"
The first few weeks are critical. Our specialist post surgery rehab at home bridges the gap between hospital discharge and full independence. Our HCPC-registered physiotherapists and occupational therapists visit you at home to restore movement, rebuild strength, and ensure you can manage daily tasks safely while you heal. We cover Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire.

By combining physiotherapy (movement and strength) with occupational therapy (daily living and home safety), we deliver a complete post-operative rehabilitation programme — not just exercises.
Physiotherapy: Restoring Movement & Strength
Our physiotherapists provide hands-on treatment and clinical guidance to restore mobility, manage pain, and get you moving safely again.
- Joint Mobilisation — Manual therapy techniques to reduce stiffness and manage pain, vital after knee and hip replacements where early range of movement determines long-term outcomes.
- Gait Re-education — Professional coaching to correct your walking pattern, improve confidence, and reduce reliance on walking aids, practising on your own floors, stairs, and garden.
- Muscle Reconditioning — Targeted exercises to rebuild strength in muscles that may have weakened before and during surgery, progressing at the right pace for your recovery stage.
- Scar Management — Advice and massage techniques to keep surgical tissue flexible and comfortable, preventing tightness from restricting your movement.
Occupational Therapy: Daily Life & Home Safety
Successful rehabilitation requires more than bending a joint — it requires a safe home environment and the confidence to manage daily tasks while you heal. Our OTs bridge this gap.
- Home Safety Assessment — Identifying trip hazards and adjusting furniture heights to protect your new joint, checking your bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen. See our home adaptations service.
- Equipment Prescriptions — Recommending the right aids (raised toilet seats, perching stools, bed levers, or specialist seating) to make daily living easier immediately while your body heals.
- Energy Pacing — Practical strategies to manage the significant fatigue that often follows major anaesthetic and surgery, teaching you how to do more without overdoing it.
- Return to Routine — A graded plan to get you back to hobbies, kitchen tasks, and driving safely with realistic milestones so you can see your progress clearly.
Why Home-Based Rehab Accelerates Recovery
Driving to a clinic with a fresh surgical wound and a stiff joint is exhausting and often painful. It uses up the energy you need for your actual exercises.
By coming to you, we save your energy for what matters: your recovery. We practise the things you actually need to do — climbing your stairs, getting in and out of your bed, sitting comfortably in your armchair. This functional approach leads to a faster, safer return to independence because every exercise has a direct purpose.
Family members can also watch and learn, giving them the confidence to support you safely between sessions.
What to Expect After Surgery
Initial assessment at home
Your therapist visits within days of discharge (60-90 minutes). We review your surgical notes, assess mobility and pain levels, and check your home environment for safety.
Personalised rehabilitation plan
Based on your surgery type, consultant's protocol, and personal goals, we create a clear plan with measurable milestones. No generic exercise sheets.
Regular sessions
Typically one to two sessions per week, progressing exercises as your strength and range improve. Most post-surgery patients see meaningful improvements within 6–12 weeks.
Return to independence
Our goal is to get you back to normal activities as safely and quickly as possible — walking confidently, managing stairs, returning to hobbies, and eventually driving again.
What Patients Say About Our Post-Surgery Rehab
Independent reviews from patients we have helped recover at home. Read all our 5-star Google reviews.
"We had Seena help my 91 year old mum recover from a hip replacement operation last year. Seena was excellent at encouraging my mum to do all the appropriate exercises and getting her confidence back after her fall. We have been very pleased with the results. We have been using Seena on a weekly basis for 10 months as we see the benefit she is giving to my mum. She would not be as strong on her feet if we did not have Seena helping us. Thank you Seena."

"My daughter contacted Medella for advice after my major surgery and stroke. The receptionist was extremely helpful and felt Seena would be the right physiotherapist to help me. Seena has given a sympathetic but firm approach encouraging me to regain movement in both my arms and to also strengthen my legs. Her knowledge and expertise have been invaluable and her exercises gentle but challenging. I would highly recommend her."

PhysiotherapyFrequently Asked Questions
When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?
Ideally within the first week of being discharged. The first 6-12 weeks are the “golden window” for regaining range of movement, especially after knee replacements. Early intervention prevents stiffness from setting in and ensures you do not develop bad walking habits. Contact us before you leave hospital if possible so we can visit within days.
Will the treatment hurt?
Post-surgical rehab requires some hard work, and it can be uncomfortable to move a stiff joint. However, we never force pain. Our goal is to manage your discomfort while gently pushing your progress. We always work within your tolerance levels and adjust exercises as needed.
How often will I need sessions?
Most patients benefit from one to two sessions per week in the early stages, reducing as strength and confidence improve. The exact frequency depends on your surgery, your progress, and your goals. There are no contracts — you can increase, decrease, or stop sessions at any time.
Do you work alongside the NHS?
Yes. We are a private service, but many patients use us to supplement their NHS care or because they need more frequent visits than the NHS can provide. We are happy to coordinate with your NHS discharge team, consultant, or GP. Many of our therapists also hold NHS positions.
Which areas do you cover?
We provide home visits across Hampshire, Dorset, and Wiltshire. This includes Southampton, Bournemouth, Poole, Salisbury, Ringwood, and the surrounding towns and villages.
